HDFC Bank — the deposit mix is doing more work than the loan book

HDFCBANKBanking#nims#deposits#liability-franchise

I keep coming back to the liability side. Credit growth stories are plentiful; the constraint that actually shows up in the P&L is the cost of holding those loans.

What I am watching

  • CASA ratio versus system CASA. If the gap versus peers narrows while rates stay high, the franchise is doing the work. If it only holds because term deposits were repriced aggressively, NIMs will keep leaking.
  • Incremental cost of funds. Not the stock of deposits — the last few quarters of origination. That is the number that feeds the next NIM print.
  • LD ratio and wholesale dependence. A comfortable loan-to-deposit ratio is less interesting than whether the last 100 bps of growth needed CDs or borrowings.

How I am reading it

The merger noise is largely behind the stock narrative. What remains is a slower question: can a very large private bank keep gathering granular deposits at a spread that still pays for its operating machine?

I am not treating any one quarter as a verdict. I am keeping a running note of:

  1. CASA mix
  2. Term-deposit rates advertised versus what peers show
  3. Commentary on “quality of growth” versus “pace of growth”

If those three stay aligned, the rest of the banking story is easier to sit with. If they diverge, the earnings yield on the screen is not the number that matters.
